Analysis of predictive thermodynamic models for estimation of polycyclic aromatic solid solubility in hot pressurized water
The ability of two thermodynamic approaches to predict the solubility of solid compounds in hot pressurized water is studied and compared. The Regular Solution Theory, based on the solubility parameter concept, and UNIFACbased models were applied to calculate the solute activity coefficient and then, solubility predictions were compared with experimental data reported in the literature. The analysis was carried out considering polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as model substances, i.e. substances which contain only the aromatic AC and ACH groups, and for which reliable pure physical properties such as melting point, fusion enthalpy and molar volume are available in the literature. The solubility values predicted with the UNIFAC-based models were considerably better than those obtained with the solubility parameter approach. Particularly, the modified Dortmund UNIFAC model presented an appropriate functionality of solubility with temperature, and the extension of this model to other type of aromatic compounds also provided a satisfactory prediction of solubility data.This work has been financed by project S2009-AGR-1469 from the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) and CSD2007-00063 FUN-CFOOD (Programa CONSOLIDERINGENIO

Atypical modulations of N170 component during emotional processing and their links to social behaviors in ex-combatants
ABSTRACT: Emotional processing (EP) is crucial for the elaboration and implementation of adaptive social strategies. EP is also necessary for the expression of social cognition and behavior (SCB) patterns. It is well-known that war contexts induce socio-emotional atypical functioning, in particular for those who participate in combats. Thus, ex-combatants represent an ideal non-clinical population to explore EP modulation and to evaluate its relation with SCB. The aim of this study was to explore EP and its relation with SCB dimensions such as empathy, theory of mind and social skills in a sample of 50 subjects, of which 30 were ex-combatants from illegally armed groups in Colombia, and 20 controls without combat experience. We adapted an Emotional Recognition
Task for faces and words and synchronized it with electroencephalographic recording. Ex-combatants presented with higher assertion skills and showed more pronounced brain responses to faces than Controls. They did not show the bias toward anger observed in control participants whereby the latter group was more likely to misclassify neutral faces as angry. However, ex-combatants showed an atypical word valence
processing. That is, words with different emotions yielded no differences in N170 modulations. SCB variables were successfully predicted by neurocognitive variables. Our results suggest that in ex-combatants the links between EP and SCB functions are reorganized. This may reflect neurocognitive modulations associated to chronic exposure to war experiences
Testing Supergravity Grand Unification at Future Accelerator and Underground Experiments
The full parameter space of supergravity grand unified theory with
type proton decay is analysed using renormalization
group induced electroweak symmetry breaking under the restrictions that the
universal scalar mass and gluino mass are TeV (no extreme fine
tuning) and the Higgs triplet mass obeys . Future proton
decay experiments at SuperKamiokande or ICARUS can reach a sensitivity for the
mode of yr allowing a number of
predictions concerning the SUSY mass spectrum. Thus either the decay mode will be seen at these experiments or a
chargino of mass GeV will exist and hence be observable
at LEP2. Further, if yr,
then either the light Higgs has mass GeV or GeV i.e. either the light Higgs or the light chargino (or both) would be
observable at LEP2. Thus, the combination of future accelerator and future

A Geometry of the Generations
We propose a geometric theory of flavor based on the discrete group
, in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The
group treats three objects symmetrically, while making fundamental distinctions
between the generations. The top quark is the only heavy quark in the symmetry
limit, and the first and second generation squarks are degenerate. The
hierarchical nature of Yukawa matrices is a consequence of a sequential

Using synchronization of chaos to identify the dynamics of unknown systems
We address the issue of how to identify the equations of a largely unknown
chaotic system from knowledge about its state evolution. The technique can be
applied to the estimation of parameters that drift slowly with time. To
accomplish this, we propose an adaptive strategy that aims at synchronizing the
unknown real system with another system whose parameters are adaptively evolved
to converge on those of the real one. Our proposed strategy is tested to
identify the equations of the Lorenz and the Rossler systems. We also consider
the effects of measurement noise and of deviation of our fitting model from
